Lancement du réseau de recherche international RESET_GMV :

la science pour la nouvelle vision de la Grande muraille Verte

Djibouti, 25-26 avril 2023

La Grande muraille verte (GMV) est une initiative africaine ambitieuse visant à inverser durablement les processus de dégradation des écosystèmes vitaux, à faire face aux crises climatiques et à améliorer les conditions de vie tout en préservant les agro-écosystèmes dans onze pays du Sahara et du Sahel. Elle couvre 780 millions d'hectares de terres arides et semi-arides autour du Sahara et abrite 232 millions de personnes. La nouvelle vision de la GMV promeut le développement d’une mosaïque de systèmes d’utilisation durable de terres et de productions agropastorales diversifiées et résilientes au Sahel et dans la Corne de l’Afrique.

De nombreuses études scientifiques ont été menées dans tous les pays de la GMV. Seule une petite fraction de cette expertise a donné lieu à des publications utiles à la prise de décision dans la mise en œuvre de la GMV. Il est urgent de rassembler ces connaissances scientifiques interdisciplinaires et de faire de la communauté scientifique africaine un acteur majeur des coalitions naissantes territoriale, nationale et régionale mises en place pour accompagner la nouvelle vision de l’initiative GMV. Il sera ainsi possible de faire émerger des stratégies de recherche innovantes et une aide à la décision efficace.

Pour atteindre cet objectif, l'Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD) et ses partenaires scientifiques du Sud lancent l'IRN Reset_GMV - Recherche, expertise scientifique et savoirs pour la gestion durable des terres et des territoires de la GMV -, un réseau de recherche international dont l’objectif est de mobiliser intelligemment l’expertise interdisciplinaire existante pour asseoir une mise en œuvre innovante de la GMV.

Science for the new vision of the Great Green Wall

Djibouti, 25-26th of April 2023

The Great Green Wall (GGW) is an ambitious African initiative aimed at sustainably reversing degradation of vital ecosystems, addressing climate crises and improving living conditions while preserving agro-ecosystems in 11 Sahara and Sahel countries. It covers 780 million hectares of arid and semi-arid land around the Sahara and is home to 232 million people. The new GGW vision promotes the development of a mosaic of sustainable land use systems and diversified and resilient agropastoral production in the Sahel and Horn of Africa.

Numerous scientific studies have been conducted in the GGW countries, but only a small fraction of this expertise has resulted in publications that are useful for effective decision support for GGW implementation. There is therefore an urgent need to bring together this interdisciplinary scientific knowledge and to make the African scientific community a major player in the territorial, national, and regional coalitions that are being built to accompany the new vision of the GGW initiative. This will enable the emergence of new research strategies and effective decision support.

To achieve this goal, the French Institute for sustainable development (IRD) and its scientific partners in the South are launching the IRN Reset_GGW -Research, scientific expertise and knowledge for land and territories sustainable management in the GGW areas -, an interdisciplinary, inter-institutional and international research network that aims to intelligently mobilize existing transdisciplinary expertise to support innovative implementation of the GGW.
